Advising, Training and Teaching
I take on a small number of independent engagements each year, advising, training and teaching about artificial intelligence.
These are the questions I help people and organisations answer:
- Where can AI create real value in our organisation?
- Which use cases should we prioritise, and which should we avoid?
- Which models and tools fit our requirements?
- How should we evaluate cost, return and implementation effort?
- What data, security and governance risks should we consider?
- How can we turn scattered ideas into a practical way forward?
- How should managers and teams be trained to use AI effectively?
Formats
- Executive workshops: intensive sessions for leadership teams.
- Corporate training: practical AI and data capability building for teams.
- Guest lectures and teaching: universities, executive programmes and internal academies.
- Advisory conversations: a short, independent sounding board on a specific decision.
- Speaking and media: talks, panels and interviews on AI and its consequences.
How I work
My focus is education, capability building, prioritisation and independent perspective, helping people understand AI well enough to make their own decisions.
This is personal, part-time work, independent of my full-time employer. Engagements are limited, scoped individually and deliberately small.
I do not take on implementation projects, software development, staff augmentation, open-ended retainers or unlimited ongoing support. For work of that kind, you want a specialist firm, and I am happy to say so.
Executive workshops
Intensive sessions that give leadership teams a working understanding of AI: what it can and cannot do, what it costs, where it fails, and how to judge opportunities in their own organisation.
Typical topics:
- The current AI landscape without the hype: capabilities, limits and economics
- Identifying and prioritising AI use cases in your business
- Build, buy or adapt: making sound sourcing decisions
- Risk, data protection and governance for AI adoption
- What generative AI and AI agents actually change for your industry
Practical and discussion-driven, adapted to the audience's sector and level, typically half a day to two days. Delivery in English or Portuguese.
Corporate training
Hands-on training that builds durable data and AI capability in teams, from managers who need to use AI tools well, to analysts and engineers working with data and models directly.
Grounded in years of university and executive teaching at Nova School of Business and Economics, and in daily practice building production AI systems.
Typical programmes:
- Using AI effectively and responsibly in daily work
- Data literacy: reading, questioning and presenting data
- Practical machine learning for technical teams
- Prompting, evaluating and integrating LLM-based tools
- Retrieval-augmented generation and AI agents: what they are good for
Tailored to the team's starting point and goals, and scoped individually. Delivery in English or Portuguese.
Guest lectures and teaching
Sessions for universities, executive programmes and internal company academies, drawing on years of teaching at Nova School of Business and Economics, executive education in data science and AI, and Computer Programming in Python for undergraduates.
Typical formats:
- Guest lectures within an existing course or programme
- Modules on AI and data for executive education
- Internal academy sessions for companies building their own training
Topics range from foundations (how these systems actually work) to consequences (what AI changes for work, business and society), adapted to the audience's level.
Delivery in English or Portuguese.
Advisory conversations
A short, independent sounding board for a specific decision, not a consulting engagement.
Useful when you want a second opinion from someone who builds AI systems daily and has no product to sell you:
- Is this use case worth pursuing, and what would make it fail?
- Does this proposed approach make technical sense?
- Which models or tools are a reasonable fit for our constraints?
- How should we think about cost, effort and risk before committing?
- Where should we start, given what we have?
Typically one or two conversations, sometimes a short written summary. Independent of any vendor and independent of my full-time employer.
Not offered: implementation projects, ongoing retainers or anything that would amount to running your AI programme for you.
Speaking and media
Talks, panels and interviews on artificial intelligence, its economics and its consequences for work, business and society.
Typical themes:
- What AI is actually changing, and what it is not
- AI and the future of work: adaptation, reskilling and the labour market
- The economics of AI adoption: cost, value and second-order effects
- Separating durable AI capabilities from hype
These are the themes I cover as an opinion columnist for CNN Portugal, as an interviewee in the Portuguese press and in webinars, and teach in executive education at Nova SBE.
Delivery in English or Portuguese.
Frequently asked questions
Is this your full-time work?
No. My full-time work is machine learning engineering. Advising, training and teaching are personal, part-time activities, independent of my employer, and I keep them deliberately limited.
Do you publish prices?
No. Engagements are scoped individually. Describe what you need through the contact form and I will tell you honestly whether I am the right person.
Do you do implementation projects?
No, no software development, staff augmentation, open-ended retainers or unlimited ongoing support. If that is what you need, a specialist firm will serve you far better, and I will say so.
What does a typical engagement look like?
Small and bounded: a workshop, a training programme, a guest lecture, or one or two advisory conversations about a specific decision. Clear start, clear end.
Are you tied to a vendor or platform?
No. The advice is independent, and I have nothing to sell you beyond my own time.
What languages do you work in?
English and Portuguese.
How do I start?
Request a 15-minute scoping call through the contact form, describing your organisation, what you need and your timeframe.
